The Effect of Poverty in Relation to Obesity

We have all undoubtedly heard about the obesity crisis in our country today. Even though upwards of 60 billion dollars is spent annually on weight loss programs and pills, over one-third of our country is obese . 1 in every 3 adults was considered overweight. 1 in 6 children was considered to be obese. However, rates of overweight and obese individuals were significantly higher in lower-income families. Why, if lower income families have less money to spend, are these cases more concentrated among them? The reason is simple; processed food. Processed food is simply anything you can buy in a grocery store that is packaged. Canned goods, bagged frozen produce or meats. Now, not all processed foods are bad. Some processed foods are simply just washed and then frozen. Others are canned with a preservative to extend the shelf life.  However, some processed food is loaded with sugar and the nutritional value has been wiped out. So, I ran across a blog post today on the subject of abortion [1] . The blog was titled, “Why I’m Pro-Choice – Blogging for Choice Part 2,” and was written by a woman known only by the name ‘Jill.’ While reading through her blog, I noticed a lot of her statements to be paradoxical. For example, one of the statements she makes is that the reason she is pro-choice is that she cares deeply about children…wait, what? You care so deeply about the lives of these precious babes that you support infanticide? Now, before you start with the arguments that, “life doesn’t begin until the first breath!”, let me point out that scientific studies have concluded that life begins at conception. Not with the first heartbeat. Not with the first breath. Not when you decide life begins. Conception. So, if life begins at that very moment, yet murder is illegal, why is this murder still legal?
