The Effect of Poverty in Relation to Obesity
We have all undoubtedly heard about the obesity crisis in our country today. Even though upwards of 60 billion dollars is spent annually on weight loss programs and pills, over one-third of our country is obese . 1 in every 3 adults was considered overweight. 1 in 6 children was considered to be obese. However, rates of overweight and obese individuals were significantly higher in lower-income families. Why, if lower income families have less money to spend, are these cases more concentrated among them? The reason is simple; processed food. Processed food is simply anything you can buy in a grocery store that is packaged. Canned goods, bagged frozen produce or meats. Now, not all processed foods are bad. Some processed foods are simply just washed and then frozen. Others are canned with a preservative to extend the shelf life.
